Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the U.S. Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) at Edwards Air Force Base, California is this image created in June 2001 depicting the AFFTC South Base complex as it appeared in June 1951. The Center’s first dedicated test aircraft, a North American F-86E Sabre is passed by the vision of the Air Force’s newest fighter aircraft, the stealthy Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor. Shown on the ramp in the background are all the other airplanes based there that first year including the North American F-82 systems testbed, Douglas Skyrocket, Bell X-5, Boeing B-47 Stratojet, and even the Navy’s Douglas XF4D-1 Skyray.
