Nowhere else on earth has so much aviation history been made than at Edwards Air Force Base near Los Angeles, California. Considered as “God’s gift to flight test,” its dry lakebeds provided safe haven for aircraft in trouble as they aimed for new frontiers in flight from 1947 through 1977. Beginning with early rocket aircraft and ending with the Space Shuttle, Air Force and NASA test pilots broke world records almost weekly on their way towards making manned space flight a reality. Commemorating all this aeronautical progress was a 12 x 25-foot mural commissioned exclusively for the new Air Force Flight Test Center Museum which opened in the summer of 1999.
