The Douglas DC-8 was America’s second jetliner to fly after the pioneering Boeing 707 and was Douglas Aircraft’s first jet-powered airliner. The DC-8 is also the world’s first passenger jet to fly at supersonic speed on a test flight. Eastern Air Lines used the DC-8 for its luxurious Golden Falcon service from New York to Miami beginning in December 1960. A total of 556 DC-8s were built and flown by 46 different world airlines and although now long gone from front-line passenger service, many of these venerable aircraft now sport upgraded turbofan engines are still in service today carrying cargo on long-range routes worldwide.
