Plane Type: B-26 Marauder
Its engines roaring, the 387th Bomb Group's "Five by Five"s is ready to taxi from its hardstand for another run over occupied Europe. Although the B-26 started its career with a rather checkered reputation, over 5,000 were produced and the sleek Martin bomber chalked up an enviable combat record. The Marauder had the lowest number of combat losses of any bomber utilized during the war. John Young selected a very special aircraft for his painting; "Five by Five's flew 188 combat mission, the second highest number flown by a USAAF bomber in the European Theatre, and all without a single mechanical abort.
